Arizona Students Protest Massive Planned Cuts To 3 Campuses
03/24/11
PHOENIX — Students at Arizona’s three state universities are publicly protesting recommended funding cuts of $235 million that would raise tuition.
About 1,400 students attended rallies Wednesday in Flagstaff, Tempe and Tucson. The Arizona Republic reports the protests were sponsored by the statewide Arizona Students’ Association.
Hundreds of students have signed letters to their state leaders. Others contributed to a chain built from slips of paper, noting the thousands of dollars they had invested in their college education.
The Arizona Senate last week passed a budget with $1.3 billion in cuts to head off budget shortfalls for this year and the next fiscal year.
The proposed tuition increases are 15 percent at Northern Arizona University, 17 percent at Arizona State University and 22 percent at the University of Arizona.
